The sun can prematurely and at times dangerously age the skin in the following ways, including but not limited to: fine lines and wrinkles, loss of elasticity, broken capillaries aka spider veins, and sun spots, and texture changes. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation in the form of rays from the sun or tanning beds hitting unprotected (via sunscreen or clothing) skin causes DNA changes at a cellular level down to the deepest levels of the skin. Collagen break down via UV radiation has been shown to quicken the natural occurrence of aging as well. UV ray-related damage additionally reduces collagen production and actually shifts your skin’s homeostasis from production to degradation as well as increased levels of skin cancer in all skin conditions due to elevated levels of UV exposure.
Indeed, current research suggests that 80% of aging in facial skin is due to sun damage. Those with darker complexions typically experience a greater length of time for sun damage to show up, but everyone walking this earth with skin is at risk for skin damage and premature aging.
Prevention and mitigation sun or photo-damage are top priorities. Daily use of SPF (30+) is the most important act you can to do to protect your skin; unfortunately just using a tinted moisturizer or foundation with SPF is not enough for the typical day even if you spend most of it indoors — anywhere the sunlight beams through is a risk. After completing your AM skincare routine, finishing the last layer with SPF is the perfect time to apply and let soak in before optionally moving onto make up. Layering skincare products correctly and in the right order promotes better product absorption and efficacy — you get more out of the products but also the process itself. Utilizing a pressing and patting motion helps apply the product evenly and gently and helps prevent any streaks or casting.
What are your options if you already have sun damage in the form of sun spots or texture concerns? For established clients, a professional-grade chemical peel or laser session can effectively target and alleviate hyper-pigmentation (uneven skin tone) or sun-induced texture.
